Police member shot and injured in recent crossfire in Papua's Kiwirok

Alexander Loen, Jayapura, Jubi – A crossfire between armed groups and the Indonesian Military (TNI) and police occurred again in Kiwirok District, Bintang Mountains Regency, Papua on Monday, January 17, 2022.

A member of Mobile Brigade, First Agent Bachtiar, was evacuated to Jayapura City because he was shot in the back.

Bintang Mountains Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Cahyo Sukarnito said that the shooting in Kiwirok on Monday occurred at around 06.30 a.m. local time. He said that the shooting occurred between the security forces and an armed group led by Lamek Alipki Taplo.

"The shooting occurred before the troop withdrawal to Timika Regency. Currently, joint security forces are continuing to pursue the armed group led by Lamek Alipki Taplo," said Sukarnito in Jayapura on Monday.

After the shooting, the situation in the Kiwirok District was quite settled, Cahyo claimed. "The Cartenz Peace Operation has deployed troops to the area," he said.

Papua Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Ahmad Musthofa Kamal said there were no fatalities or civil casualties in the shooting that occurred in Kiwirok on Monday. He said that the security forces continued to guard for armed groups at vulnerable points in the area.

"First Agent Bachtiar has been evacuated to Bhayangkara Hospital in Jayapura. [He is being evaluated] for further treatment," said Kamal.
