Andita Rahma, Jakarta – Indonesia claimed the level of carbon emissions and deforestation in the country were the lowest this year in the past 20 years.

However, Climate Transparency 2021 reported the government's efforts to suppress emission remained poor as coal-powered plants still dominate energy sources. The report assessed Indonesia's Nationally Determined Contribution has not fulfilled the Paris agreement.

The Green Economic Program Manager of Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR), Lisa Wijayani, said the government should set a more ambitious target to reduce carbon emissions and greenhouse effects as Indonesia would face a risk of soaring carbon emissions beyond the pre-pandemic period."Economic activities and emissions increased. Last year it was lower due to the mobility restrictions," said Lisa as quoted by Tempo on Monday, November 1, 2021. She also mentioned that the greenhouse emissions in Indonesia came from the energy sector with 35% and the industrial and the transportation sectors with 27%.

Lisa reminded that in 2015 the Paris agreement was signed to limit the world's temperature for no more than 1.5 Celsius degree in 2100. Meanwhile, in April 2021, Indonesia targeted to slash emissions by 29% on its own and 41% with international assistance in 2030.

President Joko Widodo or Jokowi emphasized that Indonesia had a clear commitment and is consistent in handling climate change. He also mentioned forest fires in Indonesia had shrunk by 82%.

Indonesia has also targeted to achieve net sink carbon for the land and forest sector in 2030 at the latest and neutral carbon in 2060.
