Yudha Baskoro, Bogor, West Java – Hundreds of people die from Covid-19 every day in Indonesia and the daily tally has occasionally topped 1,000 at its peak.

With the highly contagious Delta variant still ravaging and health system nearing collapse, burying Covid-19 victims now becomes a serious problem. Many victims are dying while self-isolating at homes after being turned away by overloaded hospitals.

In the West Java city of Bogor, a group of volunteers called Semboja Team lends their hand to handle the corpses of Covid-19 victims.

They pick up bodies from homes, bathe them, perform Islamic prayer when needed and bury them.

The team was set up by the city government as the municipal hospital and 15 public health centers were unable to monitor more than 6,000 Covid-19 sufferers self-isolating at homes.

The virus has killed more than 72,000 people in Indonesia as of Saturday.
