Friski Riana, Jakarta – The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) opined that the Job Creation Law potentially lowers the rights of women workers both in the country and abroad.

"Komnas Perempuan laments the existence of contradictory policies, especially through the Job Creation Law which is initiated by the government," said the chairperson of Komnas Perempuan, Andy Yentriyani, in a written statement on Thursday, October 22, 2020.

Andy argued that the new law posed a disproportionate risk of impact on women with disabilities, including those with disabilities due to work accidents. It was also feared the policy could make efforts on the prevention of violence against women becoming ineffective.

"Especially related to potential natural resources and agrarian conflicts that are increasing due to ambitious development projects that hinder people's substantive participation," she explained.

Throughout 2020, Andy recalled that Komnas Perempuan received seven reports of violence against women related to natural resources and agrarian conflicts that dealt with business interests or development policies.

Therefore, Komnas Perempuan suggested the government correct the contents of the Job Creation Law and the next policy-making process in order to ensure and support the protection of the constitutional rights of women workers.
