Indonesia reports highest Covid-19 death toll in more than a month

Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Indonesia reported 99 coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday, the highest daily death toll in the outbreak since July 23. A total of 6,858 people have been killed since the outbreak.

The government doesn't include deaths in probable cases as Covid-19 deaths, despite thousands more of deceased patients have been buried under strict protocols against the virus, including the use of plastic-wrapped coffins.

East Java reported the highest daily death toll of 27, bringing its total number of Covid-19 deaths to 2,222, more than any other provinces. Central Java added 25 more deaths for a total of 874, while Jakarta reported 16 fatalities to take its total death toll to 1,129.

The number of confirmed cases of the virus spiked by 2,447 countrywide, the third-highest daily rise since the outbreak, to take the country's total to 157,859.Jakarta recorded 637 new cases to take its total to 34,740. The capital has been averaging 534 cases since the beginning of the month, adding more than 13,300 cases in a span of 25 days.

East Java registered 356 more cases for a total of 30,998 cases. Combined cases from Jakarta and East Java alone account for 41 percent of the national count.

West Java saw its highest daily rise in 11 days with 250 new cases, taking its total to 9,670.

Central Java, the third worst-affected province, added 198 new cases for a total of 12,628.

For the third time this month, East Kalimantan saw a three-digit daily increase with 141 new cases on Tuesday, bringing its total number of cases to 3,286.

North Sumatra also saw a spike after experiencing a relatively small number of daily cases in the past week, with 134 new cases for a total of 6,300.

South Sulawesi, among the top four of provinces with the most cases, has managed to keep daily rise within two digits for nine consecutive days and had a total of 11,568 cases as of Tuesday.

The number of cured or discharged Covid-19 patients has increased by 1,807 over the last 24 hours, after a dramatic surge of 3,560 recoveries a day earlier.

The total number of recovered patients stood at 112,867, accounting for 71.5 percent of overall cases. That means that the country still has more than 38,000 active cases of the virus.
