Heru Andriyanto, Yustinus Paat, Jakarta – Confirmed cases of coronavirus in Jakarta crossed 30,000 while the total number of Covid-19 deaths also exceeded 1,000 on Tuesday as the capital city endured the toughest week in the outbreak.
Jakarta added 513 new cases on Tuesday, the highest daily count among other provinces, to take its total to 30,465. It also reported the highest daily death toll with 19 Covid-19 deaths for a total of 1,014.
The month to date average of daily cases in Jakarta is 504 and it has added more than 9,000 cases since the beginning of the month.
The city's Health Department revealed in the weekend that ICU bed occupancy has reached 70 percent, while 66 percent of isolation beds for covid-19 patients have been taken.
"Our hospitals aren't designed to cope with this kind of pandemic," Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said on Tuesday. He said there are 67 hospitals in the capital designated for Covid-19 patients that together have 4,456 isolation beds and 483 ICU beds.
The hospital capacity has been greatly increased since early March, when only eight hospitals could handle Covid-19 patients with a combined capacity of 900 isolation beds and around 200 ICU beds, the governor said.
More recoveries
At the national count, 1,673 new confirmed cases of coronavirues were reported on Tuesday, the lowest daily figure in more than two weeks, bringing the total number of cases to 143,043.
The country has been averaging 1,926 cases per day since August 1, adding more than 34,600 cases month-do-date.
The death toll increased by 70 for a total of 6,277, with East Java and Central Java also reporting two-digit number.
The number of cured or discharged Covid-19 patients surpassed that of new cases for the first time in six days, with 1,848 recoveries in the last 24 hours for a total of 96,306, or 67.3 percent of the total cases.
East java registered 312 more cases to take its total to 28,551, including 2,055 deaths.
Central Java, the third worst-affected province, reported 118 cases for a total of 11,793 with 10 more Covid-19 deaths to bring its total death toll to 801.
North Sumatra was the last province to have a three-digit figure in the day, with 130 cases for a total of 5,820. It reported only 17 cases a day earlier.
New cases in South Sulawesi dropped to 39 from nearly 100 cases a day earlier and it remained among the top four of most-affected provinces with 11,187 cases and 346 deaths.
West Java has managed to contained daily infections below two digits for the last three days, with 45 new cases for a total of 8,685 cases.
