Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – The total death toll from the coronavirus outbreak in Indonesia exceeded 5,000 on Thursday as daily deaths have been climbing in the last four days.
The country reported 83 more deaths, taking the total death toll to 5,058. It was the fourth day in a row that the daily death toll was up from the reported 57 daily Covid-19 deaths on Monday. Deaths from probable Covid-19 cases are not included in the government tally.
The highest daily death toll was 139 recorded on July 22. However, the seven-day average death toll dropped significantly to 69 from 100 in the previous week.
New confirmed cases of the virus jumped by 1,904 on Thursday, down from 2,381 a day earlier, to take the country's total to 106,336.
Four provinces on the most densely-populated island of Java reported a three-digit figure, with Jakarta leading the pack.
The capital city added 397 more cases, bringing its total tally to 20,969. Jakarta has registered the most daily cases for six consecutive days.
It also reported the highest daily death toll on Thursday, with 19 deaths for a total of 817.
East Java, the worst hit by the pandemic, has a total of 21,772 cases – and increase by 288 – including 1,677 deaths. Despite no longer being the biggest contributor to the national tally of daily cases for the most part of the month, East Java continues to report a significant number of daily infections.
Daily confirmed cases of coronavirus in East Java averaged 321 in July.
In Central Java, Covid-19 cases increased by 161 on Thursday for a total of 9,281. With a faster speed of infection, Central Java is on the brink of surpassing South Sulawesi as the third province with the most cases.
South Sulawesi has recorded 9,346 cases as of Thursday. West Java saw a sudden surge in infections on Thursday, with 147 cases to take its total to 6,461.
The number of cured or discharged Covid-19 patients hit the second highest rise with 2,154 recoveries. The highest number of daily recoveries was 2,366 recorded on Tuesday. It's the third time since the outbreak that daily recoveries have exceeded 2,000.
A total of 64,292 Covid-19 patients have recovered, accounting for 60.5 percent of the overall confirmed cases. The number of active cases stood at nearly 37,000 on Thursday.
