Jakarta – Jakarta reported 584 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, its highest one-day spike since the first confirmed cases were detected in the capital in March.

"Today's number is quite high with more than 400 new cases. There are 584 of them to be precise," Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said during a teleconference on Wednesday morning, as quoted by kompas.com.

Anies said increased daily tallies were to expected as the city administration had ramped up testing.

"If Jakarta wants the figure to be low, then we don't need to carry out more testing," the governor said, adding that widespread testing was necessary to track down carriers so they could be isolated from other people.

He said the public did not need to panic about the spike in confirmed cases. "We have repeatedly emphasized that we are not seeking to lower the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases but to decrease transmission of the disease," he said

However, the chairman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) faction in the Jakarta City Council, Gembong Warsono, criticized the administration's response to the outbreak.

"If we suppress transmission, the case number will not increase no matter how many tests we do," Gembong said, highlighting that people were beginning to neglect health protocols.

The Health Ministry announced 2,381 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing the total number of confirmed infections nationwide to 104,432. (vny)
