Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Indonesia reported 1,906 new cases of coronavirus on Thursday, the second highest rise in a day, to take the country's total to 93,657 as infection rate in Jakarta, East Java and Central Java continued to surge.

The previous daily record was a dramatic 2,657 cases on July 9.

Jakarta saw a new daily high with 470 new cases in the past 24 hours, while East Java and Central Java contributed 357 and 295, respectively.

The daily death toll increased by 117 to a total of 4,567. It was the third time daily Covid-19 deaths exceeded 100. The mortality rate climbed to 4.9 percent, among the highest in Asia.

Central Java again reported the highest daily death toll on Thursday with 60 more Covid-19 deaths to surpass the 500 mark overall. The province hit a new national record with 70 deaths a day earlier.

Total coronavirus cases in Central Java have topped 8,000 and the province is set to surpass South Sulawesi (8,527) as the third province with the most cases within a few days.

East Java has a total of 19,450 cases including 1,525 deaths, 29 more from yesterday.

Jakarta has recorded the fastest speed of new infections in the past two weeks and the number of confirmed cases has crossed 18,000. For the sixth day in a row, Jakarta has reported the most daily cases among the country's 34 provinces.

However, with the advantage of having the country's best medical and isolation facilities, the capital city has reported fewer deaths than other hotspots. Only two more Covid-19 patients have died in Jakarta in the last 24 hours, taking its total death toll to 751, less than half of East Java's.

The number of cured Covid-19 patients reached the second daily high with 1,909 recoveries, taking the total number of recovered patients to 52,164 countrywide, or 55.7 percent of the total confirmed cases.

Indonesia has nearly 37,000 active cases as of Thursday, representing 39.4 percent of the overall cases.
