Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – New confirmed cases of coronavirus infections in Jakarta surged by 433 on Tuesday – the city's highest single-day rise so far – to take its total to 17,279, according to the National Covid-19 Task Force.

The figure came after total cases until Monday were revised to 16,846 from 16,899 as reported earlier.

Jakarta has been averaging around 280 cases per day since the start of the month, a sharp increase from an average of 135 in June.

It's the fourth day in a row Jakarta has reported the highest daily number of new Covid-19 cases among the country's 34 provinces.

New cases grew by 1,655 nationwide, bringing the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases to 89,869. That included 4,320 deaths, 81 more from a day earlier.

Four highest daily Covid-19 deaths have occurred in the past week, including a record 127 on Sunday.

Daily cases average nearly 1,600 this month, meaning that the country will hit the 100,000 mark before the end of this month if the trend continues.

Indonesia has surpassed China in the global statistics of Covid-19 infections since last weekend.

East Java remained the worst hit by the outbreak, adding 283 more cases on Tuesday to a total of 18,828.

Combined cases from Jakarta and East Java accounted for 40 percent of the national tally.

East Java has been recording the most daily Covid-19 deaths since the start of the month, including 28 deaths on Tuesday to take its total death toll to 1,461. It's almost double than Jakarta's 748 deaths overall.

Central Java reported 121 new cases to take its total to 7,407, including 374 deaths. The province's death toll was the third highest after East Java and Jakarta, but its overall cases came fourth after South Sulawesi, which has registered 8,257 cases as of Tuesday.

West Java, Indonesia's biggest province with a population of around 5 million, was in fifth with 5,259 cases, an increase by 61 from the previous day.

South Kalimantan joined the provinces with more than 5,000 cases on Tuesday after registering 92 new cases.
