Antara, Jakarta – The Head of the Sorong Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Herlin Sasabone, confirmed that four people died due to flood and landslide that hit the city on Thursday night, July 16, 2020.
Herlin explained the initial report from the field team suggested that three people were killed by the incident. Two victims, Afandi Hataul and Faris, died due to landslide, and the other Isak Ananias died due to electric shock at around 9 p.m. local times.
The fourth victim Jafar Kalbarin, meanwhile, was reported dead as he was buried in a landslide at about 10 p.m., he said.
According to Herlin, the fatal incidents of the four victims occurred in Klademak II and Klademak III. "At least three people were injured. The BPBD is still waiting for data of injured victims and houses submerged by floodwater and buried by a landslide," Herlin added.
Hundreds of people and their vehicles were trapped in flooding at KM 9 of Sorong City until Rawa Indah areas late Friday. They could not pass the streets due to the strong current of floodwater and its high level.
Based on Antara's monitoring, two and four-wheeled vehicles were lined up along KM 9 to Rawa Indah, Sorong, West Papua. Some people recklessly pushed their bikes through the flood, while some took a U-turn to reach their closest relatives.
