Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – The number of cured or discharged Covid-19 patients in Indonesia increased by 1,051 to a total of 36,689 on Monday, outnumbering active cases for the first time since the outbreak.
Indonesia recorded a total of 36,636 active cases on the same day, after the number of daily infections was down by 24 percent to 1,282 from the previous day. It was also the lowest daily figure in six days.
Southeast Asia's biggest country now has 76,981 confirmed cases of coronavirus, including 3,656 deaths.
Jakarta reported the most cases of the day, with 281 new cases to take its total to 14,797, including 687 deaths.
It's only for the second time since June 26 that Jakarta has more daily cases than East Java. East Java remains the worst-hit province with a total of 16,877 cases – an increase of 219 from yesterday – and 1,226 deaths.
South Sulawesi added 124 more cases to bring its total to 7,097. Central Java was the fourth-highest province with confirmed coronavirus cases, registering a total of 5,573 cases, 100 more from the previous day.
Eight of the country's 34 provinces reported no new cases in the 24-hour period.
Only several provinces have imposed partial lockdown under the so-called large-scale social restrictions and most of them have begun to gradually lift the restrictions since last month.
Jakarta saw resurgence in new cases when it started the transition period in mid-June before it fully reopens.
Central Java also began to experience a surge in cases since last month to surpass West Java as the fourth most-affected province.
