Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – The surge in coronavirus infections in Indonesia continued on Monday with 1,209 new cases, taking the country's total to 64,958.
The total cases included 3,241 deaths, 70 more from yesterday. It was the third highest daily death toll rise, with all the three records occurring in the past seven days.
The mortality rate in Indonesia stands at 5 percent, higher than the global rate of 4.7 percent. Worst-hit province East Java and Jakarta were the biggest contributors to Monday's surge.
East Java reported 308 new cases, taking its total to 14,321. It also reported the highest death toll in the day with 33 fatalities, bringing its total Covid-19 deaths to 1,053.
Jakarta, which experts said was being hit by a second wave of infections, registered 232 more cases to a total of 12,667.
Transmission rate in Central Java has been in the upward trend since it rose to the top four provinces with the most cases last month, reporting 127 cases to bring its total to 4,738. It now has 215 Covid-19 deaths, 15 more from the previous day.
No other provinces reported more than four deaths in the day. Even Jakarta has no coronavirus-related fatality in the past 24 hours.
South Sulawesi, the third most-affected province, appeared to have eased the outbreak with 84 new cases. It has a total of 5,974 cases but Central Java has been closing in since mid-June.
There is a growing concern about surging cases in West Java, Indonesia's biggest province with a population of close to 50 million. The curve has been climbing in the province in the past week and cases are back to the three-digit figure.
It reported 126 new cases on Monday, bringing the total number of cases to 3,700 and retaking the fifth place from South Kalimantan among most-affected provinces.
There were new clusters in West Java after it began to reopen businesses last month. Tens of infection cases have been reported from at least two major business premises in Bekasi and Bogor.
Most of the country's 34 provinces reported 10 cases or fewer in the day, with 12 of them having none.
In another encouraging news, the number of cured Covid-19 patients jumped by 814 to 29,919, or 46.1 percent of the total cases. The country now has 31,798 active infections – 49 percent of overall cases.
