Yudha Baskoro – The Pondok Ranggon public cemetery in East Jakarta is starting to run out of graves to bury Covid-19 victims.

On Wednesday, a worker at the cemetery said every day they bury up to 20 victims of the pandemic. "We're worried there might not be enough space here to bury all of them," he said.

According to data from the Jakarta provincial government, the number of coronavirus cases in the capital has continued to climb every day. However, the number of funerals for Covid-19 victims has actually decreased.

In recent days, there have been on average 30 burials of coronavirus victims every day, down from around 50 per day earlier during the pandemic.

Aside from Pondok Ranggon, the provincial government has also designated the Tegal Alur public cemetery in West Jakarta for Covid-19 victims.

As of Wednesday, Jakarta has reported 3,112 confirmed coronavirus cases, 237 recoveries and 297 deaths. A total of 1,826 people are still in hospitals being treated for Covid-19 and 752 are in self-isolation at home.

Jakarta is currently under a large-scale social restriction (PSBB) for the next 28 days to try to break the transmission cycle of the coronavirus. This second phase of the PSBB began on April 24 and will last until May 22.
