Budiarti Utami Putri, Jakarta – Director of the Jakarta Legal Aid (LBH), Arif Maulana launched strong criticism against the government's Omnibus Job Creation Bill (RUU Cipta Kerja) that was composed in a short amount of time. He cited a statement by former Constitutional Court Judge Maria Farida who compared it to the Netherlands that needed five-years to complete an Omnibus Law.
"[Maria] once said that the Netherlands needed five years to compose their omnibus law with a three-year transitional period," said Arif in the public discussion in Jakarta on Wednesday.
LBH Jakarta's criticism comes as a stark contrast to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo who – on numerous occasions – expressed intent to complete the omnibus job creation bill within 100-days.
As of now, the omnibus job creation bill is widely believed to be harmful against labor workers and the environment.
Moreover, Arif Maulana argues that the Omnibus Job Creation Bill (RUU Cipta Kerja) is faulty in its drafting and substance as he accuses the government of not being transparent in composing the law and averted from public participation in composing it even though Law No.12/2011 oversees this and mandates the government to be transparent and accountable in composing laws.
"This is reckless behavior. I think this is an awful practice in forming laws and regulations," said the LBH Jakarta director.
