Jokowi invites immigrant community to discuss Papua issues

Ahmad Faiz, Jakarta – Several leaders of immigrant communities in Papua visited President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo at State Palace, Tuesday, Oct. 15. The head of South Sulawesi Community in Papua, Mansur, said their visit aimed to discuss the security situation post the riot last month.

During the meeting, Mansur said, the President appealed to the public to remain calm and demanded settlers to help create a safe environment.

"Create peace and order in Papua among all communities, both Papuans and non-Papuans," said Mansur imitating Widodo's remarks after the session.

The President also pledged to visit Wamena and Jayapura in the near future, he added.

Mansur reiterated that all communities of immigrants have thrown their weight behind the President to generate peace and order in the country's eastern province for the sake of the regional development. He also urged law enforcers to take firm actions in dealing with all legal problems in the province.

In light of the mass exodus of immigrants, Mansur considered it as a temporary move. Should the condition in Papua backs to stable, the people will return there. He said people fleeing the region as they went through a sense of trauma.
