Papua unrest: TNI-police deploy 2,500 personnel to Jayapura

Andita Rahma, Jakarta – Police Chief of Public Information Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo said his office and the national armed forces (TNI) despatched 2,500 joint personnel to Jayapura, Papua, after the peace rally that turned to riot in the region.

"In total, there is 2,500 Police-TNI personnel. It's in Jayapura alone," Dedi said Saturday, August 31.

The police officers were deployed from several regional police offices namely East Kalimantan Police, West Kalimantan Police, Central Kalimantan Police, South Kalimantan Police, and National Police's Mako Brimob (Mobile Brigade), according to Dedi.

"The addition of the personnel is aimed at recovering the security in Jayapura and surrounding areas," he said.

The Papua unrest caused damages to material in the region. The Papuan People's Assembly (MRP) office on Abepura Road was set on fire by a mob. The Telkom office on Jalan Koti was also burned.

The masses also set other public service facilities on fire, such as the post office and gas stations. Thousands of people then threw rocks at several office buildings and hotels in Jayapura.
