Jakarta – A 6.0-magnitude earthquake in Central Mamberamo regency in Papua was followed by at least 30 aftershocks within six hours after the main shock at 8:05 a.m. Jakarta time on Monday or 10:05 a.m. local time, a government agency has reported.

The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) stated in a release on Monday that as of 1:53 p.m. Jakarta time, there had been 30 aftershocks ranging from 2.9-magnitude to 5.5-magnitude.

The main shock according to the US Geological Survey website had a magnitude of 6.1 and the epicenter was on land, 232 kilometer west of Abepura.

"According to the location and the depth of the quake, the earthquakes were associated with Mamberamo fault activity," the PVMBG website said on Monday.

The head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, Dwikorita Karnawati, said on Monday that the Papua earthquakes were tectonic. Having a depth of 10 kilometers, Dwikorita said the first one was a shallow earthquake.
