Jakarta – The head of the selection committee for the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan), Usman Hamid, says not enough candidates were applying to be Komnas Perempuan commissioners and the deadline is only six weeks from now.

"I can even confirm that there had not been a single one with complete registration documents," Usman said as quoted by tempo.co.

Registration for applying to be a commissioner opened on May 25 and is to close on July 31.

However, Usman said the good news is that there had been representatives sent from community groups preparing themselves for selection: among them the Dayak women of East Kalimantan. The representatives had been working hard to fight for the rights of local women, Usman said.

He said the committee is to promote the openings through media, on campuses and in communities in rural areas in Indonesia.

"We are planning to go to Palu in Central Sulawesi to do publicity there," Usman said.

The committee is also working with Gadjah Mada University to attract scholars. "We appeal to societies to send their representatives for the election of commissioners to Komnas Perempuan," Usman said.

Those interested in becoming commissioners can send applications to the Election Committee Secretary of Komnas Perempuan at Jl. Latuharhari, No. 4B, Menteng, Jakarta, 10310, or through email via [email protected]. For further information, interested applicants can contact committee spokesperson Ahmad Junaidi at 081218137239.
