Jakarta – Some 10 percent of toddlers in West Jakarta suffer from health problems, most of which are related to nutrition, the municipality has announced.
West Jakarta assistant of administration and public welfare Yunus Burhan said that the administration had taken actions to address the issue.
"Three of the most common health problems are stunting, being underweight and obesity. These are the problems we're facing right now," he said as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com on Tuesday.
There are about 110,000 toddlers in the municipality, 10 percent of whom have health problems, Yunus said.
"But not all of the health issues are related to nutrition. Some of them suffer from congenital diseases like lung and heart diseases," he added.
West Jakarta Health Agency head Weningtyas Purnomo Rini said the agency had attempted to prevent the problems at an early stage.
"We have to check the parents to find out whether they carry diseases that they might hand down to their children," she said. (vla)
