Following is a brief look at some bombings in Indonesia since 1999. The list is by no means complete, as dozens of explosions occurred over the past three years in the Maluku islands and Central Sulawesi amid deadly religious clashes.
- August 5, 2003: At least 14 people killed and about 150 wounded in an apparent suicide bombing at the Hotel Marriott in Mega Kuningan, South Jakarta. At least one foreigner was killed in the blast.
- July 14, 2003: A bomb exploded at the national parliament building in Central Jakarta, damaging a wall and shattering several windows, but causing no injuries.
- April, 27, 2003: A pipe bomb exploded at Jakarta's Sukarno-Hatta International Airport, injuring 11 people.
- April 24, 2003: Two small home-made pipe bombs exploded near the United Nations building in Central Jakarta. There were no casualties and only minor damage. A third device failed to explode.
- April 1, 2003: Two bombs exploded in North Sumatra province near a pipeline operated by state oil and gas company Pertamina. There was only minor damage and no injuries.
- March 31, 2003: A bomb exploded in the parking lot of the Medan city administration's offices in North Sumatra province, shattering windows and damaging two cars. No one was hurt.
- February 3, 2003: A bomb blast shook National Police headquarters in Jakarta, just days after police directly linked Islamic terrorism organization Jemaah Islamiyah and its leader Abu Bakar Baasyir to the deadly Bali bombings. There were no casualties, although one building and a vehicle were damaged.
- December 5, 2002: An explosion ripped through a McDonald's restaurant in Makassar, South Sulawesi, killing three people and injuring two.
- November 17, 2002: Homemade bombs were placed next to a KFC fast-food outlet in Manado, North Sulawesi.
- October 12, 2002: Two bombs exploded at nightclubs in Bali's Kuta district, killing 202 people, mostly foreign tourists. A third bomb exploded outside the US Consulate causing only minor damage and no injuries. Regional terrorism group Jemaah Islamiyah was blamed for the attacks.
- October 12, 2002: A bomb exploded outside the Philippine Consulate in Manado, North Sulawesi, a few hours before the Bali bombings. No one was injured.
- September 23, 2002: A botched grenade attack near a Central Jakarta house owned by the US Embassy killed one man and injured another.
- July 1, 2002: An explosion occurred at a Jakarta shopping mall owned by the Army's elite Special Forces (Kopassus), injuring four people.
- June 9, 2002: A homemade bomb exploded in Jakarta's Chinatown, injuring at least five people outside the Exotic Discotheque. Police defused two other another crudely made bombs found outside two other popular Jakarta nightspots: Hard Rock Cafe and the 1001 Nights disco.
- January 1, 2002: A hand grenade exploded outside a restaurant in Blok M, South Jakarta, killing one man and injuring another during New Year's celebrations. It was never concluded whether the men were carrying the grenade or whether it was thrown at them.
- December 31, 2001-January 1, 2002: Bombs exploded outside four churches in Palu, Central Sulawesi, over the New Year period.
- September 23, 2001: Three explosions occurred in the parking lot of the Atrium Plaza shopping mall in Central Jakarta. Several vehicles were slightly damaged.
- August 1, 2001: A bomb carried by two Jemaah Islamiyah members exploded prematurely at Jakarta's Atrium Plaza mall, injuring one of the bombers and four other people.
- June 15, 2001: An explosion at the Mampang overpass in South Jakarta injured four people.
- June 11, 2001: An explosion at the Slipi flyover in West Jakarta injured 14 people.
- December 24, 2000: Bombs exploded outside several churches and priests' houses in 10 cities across the country, killing 19 people. Jemaah Islamiyah was later blamed for the attacks.
- September 13, 2000: A bomb exploded at the Jakarta Stock Exchange building, killing 10 people and injuring 16. Police blamed separatist rebels from Aceh for the bombing. The rebels denied involvement.
- August 1, 2000: A bomb exploded outside the Jakarta residence of the Philippines ambassador, killing two people and injuring 19 others, including the former ambassador, Leonides Caday. Jemaah Islamiyah was later blamed for the attack.
- June 4, 200: A bomb exploding in a ground floor bathroom in a building at the Attorney General's Office compound in South Jakarta. There were no injuries. The following day, two more bombs were found in the building. A Jakarta woman later told police former president Suharto's youngest son Tommy had paid her plant explosives in various state buildings, including the Attorney General's Office.
- May 28, 2000: At least 48 people were injured when a Protestant church was bombed in Medan, North Sumatra. Two more bombs that failed to detonate were discovered in two other churches
- April 19, 1999: A bomb exploded at Jakarta's Istiqlal Mosque, damaging the ground floor and injuring five people. Jemaah Islamiyah was later blamed for ordering the attack in an effort to incite religious violence.
