Sorong – The documentary film "Pig Feast: Colonialism in Our Times" (Pesta Babi: Kolonialisme di Zaman Kita), after being watched at more than 1,800 joint screenings (nobar), was officially broadcast on the Jubi TV Editorial YouTube channel on Friday 22.

Yuliana Lantipo from Jubi Media said that the film "Pesta Babi" on the YouTube channel (full movie link: https://youtu.be/MpdrWgDRVf8?si=UhaVPmZIS9qvCGQN) was launched with the aim of making it easier for the wider public to access the film as well as opening up space for public discussion regarding what the Papuan indigenous people are facing, which has not been widely discussed so far.

Yulan, Yuliana Lantipo's nickname, said that the film was first screened at her home in Papua in early March, before being taken on tour to meet many audiences. She believes that the joint screenings took place because of the independent and courageous initiative of the organisers in various places.

"Now we are officially publishing this film from the land of Papua", she explained in a written statement received by Suara Papua on Friday.

Also attending the launch was Vincen Kwipalo from the Yei indigenous community, who was a resource person in the film, who officially pressed the publication button at the launch event in the hall of Christ the Light of the World Parish in Waena, Jayapura, Papua.

The film "Pesta Babi" is an academic and ethnographic documentary film directed by Dandhy Dwi Laksono and Cypri Jehan Paju Dale, which was produced in collaboration with the New Indonesia Expedition, Watchdoc, Jubi Media, the People's Earth Heritage Foundation (Pusaka), Greenpeace Indonesia and Papua Merauke Legal Aid Foundation (LBH).

The film records how land grabbing, natural exploitation and Indonesian military operations in Papua over the last six decades have grown on an unprecedented scale.

Yulan explained that 2.5 million hectares of land and forests belonging to various tribes in South Papua are being cleared for food and energy projects. With the National Strategic Project (PSN) label, the government is rolling out the red carpet for dozens of companies and their heavy equipment in the thousands.

Yulan continued saying that in addition to this, thousands of troops are being deployed to protect the bioethanol and palm oil biodiesel projects from protests by indigenous communities. But the Malind, Yei, Awyu and Muyu indigenous peoples transformed themselves from victims of state injustice into fighters.

They organised themselves, built solidarity networks, and together with civil society groups sought justice in government centres in Papua and Jakarta. They took legal action, even though their struggle for justice through the courts reached a dead end.

They also carried out direct resistance at the location, including by erecting thousands of traditional and red crosses and by holding a pig feast.

Meanwhile, New Indonesia Expedition director Susi Haryanti revealed that during the 40 days of the joint film screenings of Pesta Babi, which started on April 12, there were at least 15,000 registrations for screenings from various regions in Indonesia and overseas.

"The greatest appreciation for the people, communities, students, and various collectives who continue to gather for joint screenings and to discuss the situation in Papua critically. In the midst of narrowing democratic space and the rapid flow of information, there is still courage to continue sitting down together, discussing and maintaining solidarity in spaces that are not always safe", said Haryanti.

Susi said the "Pesta Babi" team recorded efforts to prevent joint screenings, ranging from intimidation, persecution to closing down events at at least 52 points throughout Indonesia. A number of joint screening organisers were forced to cancel activities, but there were also those who held screenings secretly or moved locations.

Apart from the various obstacles, the "Pesta Babi" collaboration team said that piracy was also massive. At least 150 YouTube accounts uploaded the full version of the film without permission from the collaborator team. The collaboration team recorded various copyright violations and reported them to YouTube. Gradually, YouTube has removed dozens of links.
