Alya Nurbaiti, Jakarta – President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo inaugurated a new station of state-owned television provider TVRI in West Papua on Wednesday, coinciding with the commemoration of the country's Youth Pledge Day. The West Papua station is the 30th TVRI station.

"In the name of God, I hereby launch the TVRI station in West Papua. Let it continue to become the media [outlet] that unites the nation," Jokowi said in a speech broadcasted on Wednesday.

Jokowi expressed the expectation that the West Papua TVRI station would be committed to ensuring equal access to information, as the station could be accessed from the country's westernmost city of Sabang to Merauke in the east.

"The station will provide the Papuan people with quality information. Papuans will receive the same information received by Indonesians in other regions," he said.

"Through TVRI, the people in Java, Sumatra and other parts of Indonesia can learn what is happening in Papua and vice versa," he added.

Indonesia commemorates Oct. 28 as Youth Pledge Day in a nod to Oct. 28, 1928, when the youth pledged to acknowledge one motherland, one nation and one language as core elements of the Indonesian state.

In his speech, Jokowi also called on the Indonesian people to maintain solidarity and unity while promoting tolerance and diversity as the underlying principles in the effort to achieve equal development across the country.
