Yustinus Paat, Jakarta – A Jakarta court on Monday sentenced two former executives of state energy firm Pertamina to prison over a liquefied natural gas (LNG) procurement case that caused state losses of $113.8 million.
Judges at the Central Jakarta District Court handed a 4.5-year sentence to former Pertamina gas director Hari Karyuliarto and a 3.5-year term to former vice president for strategic planning and business development Yenni Andayani. The case relates to LNG purchases from US-based Corpus Christi Liquefaction between 2011 and 2014.
Presiding judge Hiashinta Fransiska Manalu said the two defendants were "proven to have abused their positions" to influence Pertamina into agreeing to procure LNG from the supplier, resulting in state losses of $113.8 million based on an audit by the Supreme Audit Body (BPK).
The ruling adds to a broader corruption case linked to the same transaction. In February 2025, the Supreme Court sentenced former Pertamina chief executive Karen Agustiawan to 13 years in prison.
According to court documents, Karen, who led Pertamina from 2009 to 2014, unilaterally signed an LNG purchase agreement with Corpus Christi Liquefaction in 2012.
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said the deal was executed without prior feasibility analysis or approval from Pertamina's board of commissioners. The government, as the company's majority shareholder, was also not informed of the transaction.
At the time, a domestic oversupply of LNG and weak demand forced Pertamina to resell the cargoes on international markets at a loss, ultimately generating financial damage estimated at more than $113 million to the state.
