Dani Prabowo, Jakarta – The Indonesian Communion of Churches (PGI) has condemned the military aggression carried out by Israel and the United States against Iran, as well as other conflicts in the Middle East.
In a statement signed by General Chairperson Jacklevyn Frits Manuputty and General Secretary Darwin Dharmawan, the PGI said that the escalation and military actions taking place in the region had caused regional instability, increased the risk of widespread conflict between countries and had the potential to trigger a global crisis.
"The PGI condemns the various military actions taken by a number of countries, including the involvement of the United States and Israel against Iran, the conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan, as well as Iran's military retaliation in the region which is considered to be expanding the circle of violence and threatening international security", read the statement as reported by the state news agency Antara on Tuesday February 3.
The PGI emphasised that the church's alignment is not directed at the political interests of any country, but rather at civilians affected by conflict, including families who have been torn apart and children who are experiencing fear and trauma.
The PGI also calls for a halt to all military actions and encouraged the United Nations (UN), international institutions, governments and the global community to prioritise dialogue and comply with international humanitarian law.
In addition to this, the PGI is inviting people to pray for peace, show solidarity with the victims, and avoid hate speech and polarisation in the midst of a global situation that is considered increasingly fragile.
The PGI hopes that world leaders will gain wisdom in choosing the path of peace and stopping actions that threaten human life and the conservation of nature in order to realise true peace for all humanity.
