Widi Agustian, Jakarta – Indonesia's coffee exports continue to gain traction in global markets, signaling stronger competitiveness among local small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
During the first half of 2025, Indonesia exported 206,700 tons of coffee to major destinations, including the United States, the European Union, Japan, the Middle East, and several Southeast Asian countries.
"This achievement reflects the growing global competitiveness of Indonesia's MSMEs," said Bagus Rachman, Deputy for Medium Enterprises at Cooperatives and MSMEs Ministry, on Wednesday. "Indonesia remains one of the world's top coffee producers, with more than 90 percent of plantations managed by smallholder farmers."
A highlight this year was the export of 15 tons of Argopuro Walida specialty coffee to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, valued at around Rp 3 billion ($181 thousand). The coffee is produced through a partnership between the Argopuro Walida Community Group and 568 coffee farmers in Situbondo, East Java, with expansion potential to involve up to 1,500 farmers in the future.
To further strengthen key national commodities, the ministry has introduced an MSME holding program focused on plantation clusters. The initiative aims to build an integrated supply chain from upstream to downstream, connecting micro, small, and medium enterprises with larger corporations.
"The Argopuro model is a clear example of how medium-sized enterprises can drive the MSME ecosystem," Bagus said.
Under this model, medium enterprises act as main operators, handling aggregation, incubation, marketing, and financing. The cluster-based approach is expected to enhance productivity, efficiency, innovation, and sustainability in the plantation sector.
"With continued support from the government, state-owned enterprises, private companies, and financial institutions, we can establish a robust and competitive partnership ecosystem," Bagus added.
Argopuro Walida's chairman, Muhlisin, affirmed the group's readiness to take an active role in the program. "We are ready to operate and connect more coffee farmers, strengthen our network, and expand our market reach," he said.
According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia's coffee exports reached $1.63 billion (Rp 27 trillion) in 2024, up 76.3 percent from the previous year. The country's top five export destinations included the United States, Egypt, Malaysia, Belgium, and Russia.
