Adil Al Hasan, Jakarta – Thousands of online motorcycle taxi (ojol) drivers turned out for the funeral of Affan Kurniawan, their peer who was run over by a police vehicle yesterday during a protest in Jakarta. The convoy departed from Affan's residence on Blora Street, Menteng, to the Karet Bivak Public Cemetery in Jakarta on Friday, August 29, 2025.

Along the way, the motorcycle convoy chanted demands for justice over the incident, while others recited prayers for Affan. "Laillahaillalah," they said.

The late Affan arrived at the Karet Bivak Public Cemetery at around 10:00 a.m. with an ambulance. The ojol drivers promptly carried the body from the vehicle to Block AA1, Block 1070, plot 0930. Among them was Affan's mother, who was seen crying. Chants and prayers continued to resonate in the area.

Police chief apologizes for the killing of Affan

The Chairperson of the Indonesian Public Transportation Workers Union (SPAI), Lily Pujiati, announced last night that Affan died after being crushed by a police mobile brigade's car. His body was taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM), Central Jakarta.

The Chief of the Indonesian National Police, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, visited the hospital to see the body and meet the ride-share driver's family. He mentioned that this tragedy would serve as an evaluation for the police.

"We will follow up on the incident. I apologize to the victim's family and the entire ojol community for the tragedy that has occurred," said Sigit in front of the RSCM morgue in the early morning of Friday, August 29, 2025.

Sigit was unable to explain in detail the solution he offered to resolve the issue of police brutality when dealing with protesters. As a result of this incident, seven Brimob (mobile brigade) officers from the Jakarta Metro Police underwent questioning.

Due to this incident, thousands of ojol drivers besieged the Brimob headquarters in the Kwitang area, Senen, Jakarta. The protest continued until the early hours of Friday.

The Director of Public Affairs & Communications of GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (GOTO), Ade Mulya, said the company would provide compensation to the victim's families. "We will provide compensation to the victims' families as a form of support," said Ade in the early morning of Friday, August 29.

Ade also assured that the company would bear all the funeral expenses. "So far, we have assisted in facilitating the ambulance, autopsy, and post-mortem examination," said Ade when met by reporters in front of the RSCM morgue.
