Intan Setiawanty, Jakarta – Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri, Jakarta Metro Police Chief, faced the anger of online motorcycle taxi drivers (ojol) during the funeral of Affan Kurniawan at Karet Bivak Cemetery, Central Jakarta, on Friday.

Affan, an ojol driver, was killed the previous night after being run over by a Brimob tactical vehicle during a protest in Jakarta.

According to Tempo's observations at the site, Asep Edi paid his respects and visited the victim's family before leaving the burial area. As he walked out, he was met with loud jeers from a crowd of ojol drivers protesting Affan's death.

"Murderer! Murderer! Murderer!" and "Enemy! Enemy! Enemy!" they shouted, many of them wearing their distinctive green jackets.

The crowd followed Asep until he entered his car, with some throwing bottles of mineral water at police and military personnel. A few protesters even broke through the police escort to get closer and hurl accusations directly at the police chief.

The tension eventually subsided after TNI personnel on guard calmed the situation. Asep Edi then departed the cemetery in a black car along with his entourage.

Earlier, before the confrontation, the police chief had been seen taking photos with ojol drivers who attended the funeral. He also shook hands with Affan's colleagues and offered an apology for the incident.

Affan was killed when a Brimob tactical vehicle struck him as security forces dispersed protesters during labor demonstrations and the "Disband the DPR" rally in Jakarta. The protest had remained peaceful from Thursday morning until late afternoon, but violence broke out by evening, leading to the fatal incident.
