Bambang Ismoyo, Jakarta – Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said Thursday that 12 American companies have established data centers in Indonesia, amid recent concerns alleging that the government sold Indonesian citizens' personal data to the United States.

"To date, 12 US companies have built data centers in Indonesia. This means they are also complying with Indonesia's regulatory requirements," Airlangga said at a press briefing in Jakarta.

Among the companies he mentioned were Microsoft, Equinix, and Amazon Web Services. He also revealed that Oracle is planning to invest up to $6 billion in a data center project in Batam.

Airlangga firmly denied allegations of data being sold or exchanged between the Indonesian and US governments.

"In fact, this data is provided voluntarily by the public when they access programs. There is no government-to-government data exchange taking place," he stressed.

According to Airlangga, data sharing occurs only in commercial contexts – such as when users access services provided by digital platforms like Google or Bing.

Nonetheless, he stressed that the Indonesian government continues to oversee how personal data is managed on servers operated by US-based firms, in line with the country's data protection laws.

"The government ensures that all data is handled within a secure and regulated framework," he said.
