Jamal Abdun Nashr, Semarang – A total of five individuals were arrested during a demonstration rejecting the Law on the Indonesian National Armed Forces or TNI Law in front of the Governor's Office and the Regional Representatives Council (DPRD) of Central Java on Thursday, March 20, 2025.
The bill itself was approved by the the House of Representatives today.
"In total, five. Three are students and two others are from different organizations," said a representative of the protesters from the Executive Board of the Diponegoro University Student Senate, Aufa Atha Ariq.
The two individuals, other than the students, who were arrested were a command car driver and a sound system operator.
He stated that the protesters faced repression from the authorities, including physical assaults. Some protesters required medical attention from paramedics.
The authorities also deployed tear gas against the crowd, while multiple water cannon vehicles were positioned in the courtyard of the Central Java Governor's Office and along Pahlawan Street.
The protesters arrived at the office complex around 03:30 PM and attempted to enter the DPRD office. They managed to enter the courtyard briefly before being forced out by security forces.
At around 06:00 PM, the protesters dispersed towards the Diponegoro University campus in Peleburan.
"Next, we will go to the Semarang City Police Headquarters to demand the release of our friends," he said.
The Semarang Police Chief, Grand Commissioner Muhammad Syahddudi, was not willing to provide information regarding the arrest of the protesters.
