Antara, Jakarta – The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Hulu Sungai Tengah Regency, South Kalimantan reported that floods have submerged three subdistricts in the past two days. BPBD has deployed 25 members of the Rapid Response Team to help 6,340 people affected by the floods.
"It has been raining continuously for the past few days, so the water discharge has increased," said BPBD Hulu Sungai Tengah Regency Head Ahmad Apandi while checking the flood situation in Barabai, Hulu Sungai Tengah, on Thursday night, Dec. 26, 2024, as quoted by Antara.
Based on the data collected by BPBD until Thursday, several buildings were affected, namely 2,210 residential units, 21 houses of worship, 12 schools, five offices, and two traditional markets. In the event of an emergency, the government will immediately build a public kitchen for people whose homes are inundated by floodwaters.
Apandi said two villages were expected to be flooded as they were currently under about half a meter of water, namely Jaranih and Masiran villages. Flooding has spread to public roads in the center of Barabai.
In addition to sending 25 TRC personnel, the Regional Disaster Management Agency, supported by officials from several agencies and dozens of private volunteers, checked all flood-affected locations. Apandi ensured that all BPBD equipment, such as rubber boats and other tools, were ready to evacuate residents in case of an emergency.
