Yustinus Paat, Jakarta – Members of the House of Representatives (DPR) who reside in the official state housing complexes have been given until the end of this month to vacate their residences, DPR Secretary-General Indra Iskandar said on Monday.

Iskandar explained that legislators receive a housing allowance in cash and are no longer entitled to live in the government-owned housing complexes in Kalibata, South Jakarta. The properties will be returned to the Ministry of Finance, which manages state assets.

"A DPR consultation meeting has set a deadline for all current and newly elected members to vacate the houses by the end of October. This allows them sufficient time to find new accommodations," Indra said during a visit to the Kalibata housing complex.

He added that discussions are currently ongoing between the DPR Secretariat, the Ministry of Finance, and the State Secretariat regarding the formal handover of the properties to the government.

The Kalibata housing complex consists of 516 homes designated for lawmakers, while an additional 80 houses are located in a nearby complex, according to Indra.

The decision to relocate lawmakers from the aging complexes was made due to structural damage and other issues that have emerged with the passage of time. The cost of repairing the homes was found to be significantly higher than providing lawmakers with new residences or housing allowances.

However, the exact amount of the housing allowance has yet to be determined, as it is contingent upon the establishment of DPR commissions for the new term, which began just last week.
