Djibril Muhammad, Jakarta – President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has selected names for the two palaces being constructed in the future national capital, Nusantara, in East Kalimantan, a close aide announced on Monday.
The grand building designed to be the official residence of the head of state will be named the State Palace, according to Public Works and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono.
A nearby building on higher ground will be called the Garuda Palace, after the mythical bird that serves as the national emblem. The Garuda Palace will function as the president's workplace.
Earlier in the day, Jokowi spent his first day working from Nusantara at the Garuda Palace, where he hosted a meeting with the Nusantara Authority and received a visit from East Kalimantan provincial leaders.
"The president said this building is no longer known as the president's office. It's now called the Garuda Palace. The building below is called the State Palace," Basuki said during a news conference at the Garuda Palace.
"These names are official now," added Basuki, who is also the acting head of the Nusantara Authority.
President Jokowi, whose second and final term will expire on October 20, previously announced he would spend the last few months of his presidency working from Nusantara despite ongoing construction and a lack of first-class facilities.
