Faisal Maliki Baskoro, Jakarta – Jakarta has emerged as one of the top 10 most congested cities worldwide. The three cities topping the list for highest traffic congestion are New York City, Mexico City, and London, according to the 2023 Global Traffic Scorecard released by traffic data analysis firm INRIX.
"In general, traffic congestion continued to grow through 2023 in the vast majority of urban areas, but many have yet to meet their 2019, pre-Covid-19 level of traffic delay. While it has been about four years since the beginning of the pandemic, it may be safe to label 2023 as the 'new normal,'" stated INRIX in its report published recently.
New York City tops the list among over 900 cities surveyed. Drivers in New York lost an average of 101 hours to traffic jams in 2023, down slightly from 105 hours in 2022. This resulted in more than $9.1 billion in lost time for the city. Compared to pre-pandemic levels, New York City remains more congested, with drivers previously losing an average of 91 hours to traffic jams.
Following New York City are Mexico City, London, Paris, and Chicago. London dropped from second place in 2022 to third place in 2023, while Paris dropped from third to fourth. Mexico City moved up from fourth place in 2022 to second place in 2023.
Jakarta ranks tenth, with drivers losing 65 hours to traffic in 2023, marking a 33 percent increase from 2022. Traffic speeds downtown were recorded at 13 miles per hour or 20.92 kilometers per hour.
Several major urban areas such as Bogota, Boston, Miami, and Toronto also saw significant increases in congestion compared to the previous year.
In 2023, congestion cost the US more than $70.4 billion, a 15 percent increase from 2022. In comparison, U.K. drivers lost nearly #7.5 billion due to congestion, an 11 percent increase, while German drivers experienced 3.3 billion euros in time lost, up by 14 percent from the previous year.
