Rahmat Hidayat – The Jakarta provincial government will switch off lights across major landmarks and thoroughfares for one hour on Saturday evening as part of a citywide campaign to promote energy conservation and reduce carbon emissions.

The initiative, scheduled from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, June 13, forms part of Jakarta's commemoration of World Environment Day 2026 and its broader efforts to encourage sustainable urban living.

The planned blackout will affect several of the Indonesian capital's most recognizable locations, including the National Monument, the Arjuna Wiwaha Statue, the Selamat Datang Monument at Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, the Youth Statue, the General Sudirman Statue, and the Jakarta City Hall complex.

Jakarta Environment Agency Head Dudi Gardesi said the initiative is intended to raise public awareness about the importance of energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.

"The one-hour darkness serves as a symbol of our collective concern for the environment and the future of the city," Dudi said on Friday.

He emphasized that reducing emissions requires broad public participation and that simple actions, when adopted collectively, can produce significant environmental benefits.

"Small changes made together can create a major impact. We invite all residents to make energy conservation part of their daily lifestyle for a healthier and more comfortable Jakarta for future generations," he said.

The program is being implemented under Governor Instruction No. 14 of 2021, which provides guidelines for energy-saving measures and carbon-emission reduction initiatives across the city.

According to the Jakarta administration, a similar event held on Saturday, April 25, generated electricity savings of 96.91 megawatt-hours and reduced energy costs by approximately Rp140.2 million ($8,600). The action also cut carbon emissions by an estimated 77.53 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.

Officials said the results demonstrate how routine measures such as switching off unused lighting and electrical devices can contribute meaningfully to environmental sustainability when adopted consistently.

The campaign aligns with Jakarta's broader environmental agenda as the city seeks to reduce its carbon footprint, improve energy efficiency, and strengthen public participation in climate-related initiatives.
