Anies Baswedan's presidential campaign dissolved

Jakarta Globe - April 30, 2024

Sella Rizky Deviani, Jakarta – Anies Baswedan announced on Tuesday the dissolution of his presidential campaign team with "honor and dignity," following his defeat to Prabowo Subianto.

The former Jakarta governor garnered nearly 25 percent of the vote, while Prabowo secured an outright win with 58 percent.

Anies and Prabowo represented contrasting political platforms, with Anies promising a drastic departure from the current government's policies, while Prabowo positioned himself as the staunchest defender of President Joko Widodo's legacy.

"This afternoon marks the conclusion of our campaign and the work that began in November. We started our campaign with a public declaration and conclude it in the same manner," Anies said during the event held at his private residence in Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta.

"We bring our work to a close with honor and dignity," he added.

His running mate, Muhaimin Iskandar, also addressed their supporters, emphasizing that the "spirit of change" instilled by the campaign will remain true and inspirational to many.

Anies may soon re-enter political competition by seeking reelection as Jakarta governor. His five-year gubernatorial term expired in 2022, and he was succeeded by a presidential appointee to facilitate simultaneous gubernatorial, mayoral, and regent elections across the country scheduled for November 27.

The National Democratic Party (Nasdem) and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), which supported his presidential bid, have indicated their intention to back Anies once again for the gubernatorial election.
