Roy Triono, Bandar Lampung – The Lampung Police have arrested a suspect and are searching for four others for allegedly opening fire in front of the provincial police headquarters in Bandar Lampung on Saturday.
All the suspects are believed to be members of a car theft ring. The detained suspect has been identified as 19-year-old Kukuh Agung Wibowo.
The incident unfolded when a police team was dispatched to raid a car theft ring following a tip-off about the sale of a stolen Honda Jazz car in the city of Bandar Lampung.
Lampung Police Chief Insp. Gen. Helmy Santika said on Sunday that the suspects fled the scene when the four-member team arrived to intercept them on Pagar Alam Street just before dawn on Saturday.
The police managed to locate the suspects at a restaurant not far from the headquarters and observed seven men arriving in a Honda Jazz and a Toyota Fortuner SUV. Outnumbered, the team decided to return to the headquarters to request reinforcement.
It was during this time that the suspects in the Toyota SUV attempted to block the officers, and one of them stepped out of the car and fired a shot into the air.
They then chased the police team and fired at least three shots from the moving vehicle in front of the headquarters.
Following further investigation, the Lampung Police identified five suspects and arrested Kukuh, who is accused of selling stolen cars.
"We have identified five suspects, including the man in our custody. As for the two other individuals, we are still investigating their involvement," Helmy said.
