Daniel A. Fajri, Jakarta – Commission II of the House of Representatives (DPR) agreed to the revised provision in KPU Regulation No. 19 of 2023 on the presidential age limit for running candidates of the general elections.
DPR officially passed the revision during a public hearing with election organizers, namely the General Elections Commission (KPU), the General Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), and the General Elections Honorary Council (DKPP).
The revised provision concerning Article 169 (q) of the General Elections Law, following the Constitutional Court (MK) decision No. 90/PUU-XXI/2023. The article provided that the age limit for running for president or vice president in the general elections is 40 years old or has been or is elected in a general election as a regional head.
"Bawaslu and KPU have always been adopting [provisions] regulated as a Law. Therefore, if there is a revision, they would have to adjust," said Commission II Head Ahmad Doli Kurnia when met on Tuesday. During the hearing, Doli read the conclusion without explaining which of the nine political fractions present agree or disagree with the revised draft of the KPU Regulation No. 19 of 2023.
Earlier, MK's decision created a gateway for current Indonesian president Joko Widodo's son Gibran Rakabuming Raka to run for vice presidential candidacy with Prabowo Subianto. Gibran is currently 36 years old.
Following the passing of the KPU Regulation's revision, KPU head Hasyim Asy'ari stated that the procedure for now is waiting for the regulation to be promulgated by the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs.
