Antara, Jakarta – Palangka Raya Education Office in Central Kalimantan cuts down school hours while wildfire smoke veiled the city. The head of the Education Office Jayani mentioned that the decision to start school later than usual was the result of the office meeting with school representatives and the principals of local pre-school, elementary school, and middle school.
"According to the letter No. 800/1590/Disdik.Um-Peg/X1/2023 regarding the school system during smoke issues, we issued several instructions, one of which is to delay the start of classes by 30 minutes, from 07:00 a.m. into 07:30 a.m.," Jayani said on Wednesday, September 27, 2023. Additionally, the classes are also cut down by 10 minutes.
Jayani also explained that no ceremonies, exercises, or extracurricular activities may be conducted outdoors during the period. Students and teachers are obliged to wear masks while doing outdoor activities. "We urge the students to consume balanced meals and be well-hydrated while at school," Jayani said.
To observe the air quality in Palangka Raya, Jayani added, schools are recommended to download the ISPUnet application issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. "If later the air quality is better, the school will proceed as normal," Jayani informed.
Palangka Raya's skies have been covered with wildfire smoke for the past few days, causing people to feel physical discomfort such as irritated eyes while doing activities outdoors. Many are seen wearing masks to avoid inhaling the dust contained in the smoky air.
