Istiqlal Mosque's caretaker finds 50 fake QRIS stickers

Antara, Jakarta – The management of Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta found at least 50 stickers of fake QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard) placed on a number of points in the mosque. This is conveyed by the deputy chair of the mosque's management, Abu Hurairah.

"There are about 50 [fake QRIS]," said Abu Huraira on Tuesday, April 11.

Abu Hurairah explained that after the discovery of the scam, his side immediately filed a report to the bank issuing the QR codes to take immediate action.

"It has been handed over to the bank that issued the QRIS. They investigate it," he said.

Earlier, surveillance camera (CCTV) footage showing a man deliberately putting fake QRIS stickers on charity boxes belonging to a number of mosques in South Jakarta made rounds on social media.

The mosques targeted include the Nurul Iman Mosque in Blok M Square, the Nurullah Mosque in Kalibata City, Pancoran, the Al Azhar Mosque in Kebayoran Baru, and the Istiqlal Mosque which is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia.

The fake QRIS sticker if scanned links the user to transfer money for the mosque restoration, fooling them into thinking they are making a donation when instead sending money to the scammers.
