Antara, Jakarta – The Jakarta Transportation Agency has officially canceled its plan to impose gender segregation for passengers of long-serving urban transportation known as 'angkot' which was initially aimed to prevent sexual harassment cases.

This plan initially came to light after one case went viral on social media over the past few days, which happened in a public transport operating in South Jakarta's Tebet area.

"Considering our society's condition towards segregating male and female passengers inside angkot cars. We are unable to implement that right now," said the agency's head Syafrin Liputo on July 13, Antaranews reported.

However, as a prevention measure, the Transporation Agency has formed a dedicated team for a helpline dubbed "Pos Sapa" for women and children that can be reached by contacting 112. This public service currently exists across 23 Transjakarta bus stops, 13 MRT stations, and 6 Jakarta LRT stations, and is aiming to cover angkot services.

Currently, drivers and other operators of public transportation under Jaklingko have received training that covers multiple issues, including a curriculum that includes how to handle and respond to emergency situations.

The city is also preparing to install CCTVs across stations, bus stops, terminals, and also public transport in the attempt to better monitor and prevent sexual harassment cases.
