Fajar Pebrianto, Jakarta – Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian on Friday made it clear that the 2024 general elections, commonly abbreviated to Pemilu, will proceed as planned as agreed by the government and the House of Representatives (DPR).
"The results of our meeting at Commission II have named the date," he said when asked at his office on March 18.
However, he balked at commenting on the public discourse promoted by a number of people suggesting the postponement of the elections. "That is all I have to say."
On February 14, 2022, the government, House members, and the General Election Commission (KPU) agreed to schedule the election on February 14, 2024.
Talks about postponing the 2024 general election were first brought up by PKB Party chairperson Muhaimin Iskandar, PAN chairperson Zulkifli Hasan, and Golkar Party chair Airlangga Hartarto. They argued that the election needs to be delayed until the national economy recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, even though Indonesia held the simultaneous regional head elections (Pilkada) during the heat of the pandemic back in 2020.
Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investments Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan was also a prominent figure in promoting the idea publicly. Interestingly, President Jokowi has never been assertive against the idea and only stated that he would abide by the constitution.
Because of this, many have urged President Jokowi to show his commitment towards the 2024 general elections.
