Moh Khory Alfarizi, Jakarta – The newly elected chairperson of Association of Indonesian Internet Providers (APJII), Muhammad Arif Angga, spoke about internet performance in Indonesia. He referred to a number of reports revealing that Internet speeds in the Indonesia is considerably slower than other countries.
Angga mentioned that Indonesia's internet performance cannot be compared to others, citing topology and vastness of the country spread across islands.
"This is a challenge for us all. Our broadband penetration is still below 20 percent," said Angga in the APJII Munas XI press conference that was held virtually on Thursday, September 30.
According to the data provided by WebsiteToolTester in 2020, Indonesia ranked 92nd globally with an average Internet speed of 6.65 Mbps. The top of the list was Taiwan with 85.02 Mbps followed by Singapore in second with 70/86 Mbps, and New Jersey (United States) in third with 67.46 Mbps.
"Why does Singapore have quick internet speed? It's because the conditions there are vastly different to Indonesia," he added.
However, he pledged to push for a broader internet penetration and spread in his three years of leadership. Angga noted that it needs the utmost partnership with local governments to realize the goal.
