Jakarta – Indonesia recorded fewer than 1,000 Covid-19 deaths for the first time in over two months on Monday while the daily count of newly cases also fell to below 10,000 as the lengthy community restrictions appear to deliver positive impacts.
The partial lockdown across stricken Java and Bali and 45 cities and districts beyond the two islands has been imposed since July 3 when the Delta variant outbreak began to rage.
At its peak, new Covid-19 cases grew above 56,000 and deaths also topped 2,000 in a single day.
But on Monday, the daily death toll fell to 842, the first time since June 15 that fewer than 1,000 Covid deaths were registered, according to government data.
The latest fatality toll brings the total number of people dying from Covid-19 to 127,214.
The ease in the Indonesian outbreak is also reflected in the plummeting number of newly cases, with just 9,604 in the past 24 hours.
The last time Indonesia reported daily count below the 10,000 mark was on June 16.
There have been 3.99 million Covid-19 cases in Southeast Asia's biggest country since the pandemic started.
In another milestone, the total number of active cases also drops to below 300,000 for the first time in nearly two months.
However, the extremely high death toll remains the biggest concern in Indonesia's Covid-19 response. The country still has the highest fatality rate in the world at the current stage of the pandemic.
Overall, 3.2 percent of Covid-19 patients have died in Indonesia.
Health authorities with the support of the police and the military have administered nearly 90 million doses of Covid vaccine to date.
Around 32 million of the country's 272 million population are now fully vaccinated.
