Mega Safitri, Jakarta – Co-founder of pandemic mitigation watchdog LaporCovid-19, Ahmad Arif, on Monday revealed there were 451 people who died during self-isolation. The highest number came from West Java, which logged 160 deaths during coronavirus self-isolation.

He said the tall number of deaths coincided with declining hospital facilities available, such as emergency rooms and treatment rooms. Most of them were cases where people were too late to be admitted to hospitals.

"The COVID-19 patients who were in self isolation were not properly treated, which resulted in the deaths," said Arif on July 12.

He believed that there should be a centralized isolation facility that utilized schools or government facilities "that has medical workers that can monitor them closely."

Arif encouraged the government to strengthen its efforts in providing online medical consultation that can help prevent a wave of people admitted to hospitals at once.

"Reports about COVID-19 patients in self-isolation who died came from outside of Java, as we discovered cases in East Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, East Nusa Tenggara, and West Sumatra," said Arif.
