Egi Adyatama, Jakarta – The LaporCovid-19 (Report Covid-19) community and Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) reported that 265 Covid patients in self-isolation had succumbed to the disease throughout June-July 2, 2021.
"Based on the tracing done by LaporCovid19 team on Twitter, online news outlets, and direct reports from the public, we found at least 265 people died of Covid-19 when they conducted self-isolation at home," the report said Saturday, July 3.
It stated that most patients died when they were self-isolating, trying to get hospital beds, and waiting at hospital emergency rooms. It occurred in 47 cities/regencies in 10 provinces. They are Jakarta, Banten, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, Lampung, Riau Islands, Riau, and East Nusa Tenggara.
LaporCovid-19 said the number had yet to represent the real condition in field as not everyone reported to them, to social media, or was being reported by mass media.
"This must be soon anticipated to prevent more deaths outside health facilities," they said.
They viewed this phenomenon as the collapse of the health facilities, causing the difficulties for Covid patients in getting proper medical services. Moreover, the bad information regarding risks created fear among the society that made them reluctant to go to the hospitals, and chose to perform self-isolation instead.
The community also considered that the government had been neglecting to fulfill the rights of health of its people in the pandemic situation while the law stated the opposite. Every Indonesian citizen has the right to get proper medical service. "This is definitely part of human rights violations."
As an anticipative measure, LaporCovid-19 and YLBHI urged the government to strengthen the health facilities and medical workers. They asserted that a strict mobility restriction must be imposed to prevent the escalating rise in coronavirus infections which would increase death risk.
