The body of a man who died after getting infected with the coronavirus was left lying for 14 hours in front of his house in North Jakarta's Sunter Agung area, illustrating the grim situation of the health crisis in the capital as stories about long waits to bury COVID-19 patients became more frequently reported in the past week.

The man reportedly died yesterday afternoon, but his neighbors in the densely populated area were reluctant to help evacuate his body after finding out that he was ill with COVID-19 prior to his death.

Members of the neighborhood unit (RT) were clued in to the possibility that his child went into self-isolation about 10 days ago. They managed to obtain the PCR test results of the man and his child, which confirmed that they had the disease.

Danang Widjanarko, who heads the Sunter Agung sub-district, said that the man's death was reported to the local COVID-19 task force yesterday afternoon.

However, the body was only picked up by the medical team in the early hours of Tuesday, allegedly due to the long burial queue for deceased COVID-19 patients in Jakarta.

Though we don't have the official data illustrating the grave crisis amid the current surge in COVID-19 cases in the capital, the city administration had to consider making more plots of land available for COVID-19 burials during the height of the last major wave in January.

As of today, official numbers show that 55,291 Indonesians have died from COVID-19, with 335 of those deaths coming in the last 24 hours. In Jakarta, 59 people died in the last 24 hours, bringing the provincial total to 7,901.
