Don't post your COVID-19 vax certificate online: task force

Please fight that unrelenting urge to post your COVID-19 vaccine certificate online, Indonesia's COVID-19 Task Force said, as it contains your private information.

In a press conference yesterday, task force spokesman Wiku Adisasmito said the COVID-19 vax certificate features a QR code containing the recipient's private information, which may be extracted by unscrupulous parties for criminal means.

"Use the certificate as it is intended, because there is the risk of having your private data leaked," Wiku said.

The government initially intended for the vax certificate, which comes in both digital and physical forms, to replace mandatory testing requirements, such as for travel.

However, that plan was scrapped amid criticism from experts, who say that getting vaccinated does not necessarily guarantee total immunity from the disease.

It remains to be seen if a similar policy will be enacted in the future, as the government is keen to aggressively promote its mass vaccination program in order to achieve herd immunity against the coronavirus by March 2022.

Indonesia began its mass vaccination program in mid-January. As of March 23, it has administered the first of two required doses of the CoronaVac vaccine, developed by Chinese pharmaceutical firm Sinovac, to 5,732,210 people, and the second dose to 2,494,422 people. Indonesia needs to inoculate 181 million people in order to achieve herd immunity.
