Egi Adyatama, Jakarta – The Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law, and Security Mahfud MD said that the final report on the deaths of six Islam Defenders Front (FPI) members has reached President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.
Mahfud MD said that he has been ordered by the President to follow up on the report that was composed by the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) and be completely transparent about the report's substances.
The coordinating minister was immediately summoned by the President not long after the Komnas HAM handed over the report.
"Nothing must be hidden," said Mahfud in the press conference held at his office in Central Jakarta on Thursday, January 14, 2021.
The investigative report was conducted independently by the human rights watchdog following the deaths of six FPI members at the Cikampek Toll road, which grabbed public attention due to conflicting statements between police and FPI officials that followed.
Four of the deaths were considered by Komnas HAM as unlawful killings by the police. However, Mahfud MD highlighted one detail in the report stating the use of firearms by a civilian, which he went to defend the police. "If the police were not provoked this would not have happened," Mahfud concluded.
