Carlos Ky Paath, Farouk Arnaz, Jakarta – President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has nominated Criminal Investigation Agency Head Comr. Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo as the new National Police chief, his office confirmed on Wednesday.
If approved by the House of Representatives, Listyo will replace Idham Azis who reaches retirement age on January 30.
State Secretary Pratikno said he has submitted the nomination letter to House Speaker Puan Maharani with a message calling for "an immediate approval".
"Madame Speaker said it could take up to 20 days to reach a decision, but we hope a faster process so that we can have a definite police chief in time," Pratikno said.
The selection process is expected to run smoothly as pro-government coalition currently holds a vast majority in the House.
Puan, a key figure in the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), said the House proceedings on police chief nomination will be conducted by the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs.
"The results will then be submitted to a House plenary session for approval," she said.
In the past, the House proceedings included a visit by Commission members to the nominee's residence.
For many, it comes to no surprise that Listyo becomes the president's pick for the top post of the National Police. Listyo served as the district police chief in Solo when Jokowi was the mayor of the Central Java town in 2011. He has also served as an assistant of the president.
A 1991 graduate of the Police Academy, Listyo became the first from his class to become a brigadier general when he was promoted as the provincial police chief in Banten in October 2016.
Within three years, he rose through the ranks to become the Criminal Investigation Agency head as a commissioner general. Listyo still has six and a half years until he retires.
